How much does a DUI attorney cost?

How much does a DUI attorney cost–it depends on the way that they bill their clients. As a DUI attorney in Phoenix, I know that the answer also varies by the experience, age and ability of the lawyer. Some newer attorneys may advertise a very low price. When I see this, I know that the attorney may not have many actual DUI jury trials under their belt. Some more experienced attorneys charge more than $10,000 for the same type of case.

Here’s the deal. There are basically three different types of billing practices for DUI attorneys. There is the hourly fee. This fee structure allows the lawyer to bill their clients by the hour. It might seem that it is a more affordable way to proceed. However, be careful. If the attorney bills for travel, a typical DUI can get very costly. My advice is to ask the attorney what they typically charge a client at the end of the process. If you hear a number that you can’t afford, walk away.

Other lawyers charge flat fees. Flat fees enable the client to know in advance how much the services are. Again, however, look out for additional fees. Some lawyers charge a flat, all-encompassing fee. Other charge an additional fee for trial. For some reason, I speak with clients all the time who get very confused about this.

The moral of the story is that the fee agreement should not be confusing or perplexing to the potential client. If you don’t understand what you are getting into, it might be time to speak with a different person. In my years of practice, I think it is best to be as up front as possible. Our DUI firm charges flat fees with no hidden costs for trial. We write everything down. We also encourage our clients to get second and third opinions if they have any doubts whatsoever. In the end, it has made our clients very happy and us more successful.
