Dog Bites

DOG BITE CASES CAN BE A NIGHTMARE & WE CAN HELP

Dog bite laws in the United States vary as you go from state to state but Arizona is one of the states that supports statutory strict liability. This means that Arizona has applied stringent laws making owners strictly liable for injuries caused by a dog bite. This is intended to protect others from being needlessly victimized from irresponsible dog owners. Every year there are 4.7 million incidents involving a dog bite.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association also known as AVMA, and the Humane Society of the United States, dog bites requiring medical attention range from 500,000 to 800,000 incidents annually. Along with this, approximately fifteen of these people in question will die as a result of these attacks.

The legal rights of a dog bite victim all depend on where the attack happened. As mentioned previously, laws vary from state to state, and sometimes can even from city to city. In most states a victim can recover compensation from a dog owner because of the state’s “dog bite statute”, which refers to the state’s law regarding dog bites.

WHO PAYS?

Dog bite law in Arizona is very strict, and depending upon the circumstances, a victim can recover compensation from:

  • a person whose negligence caused the attack
  • a person who violated a leash law or a law prohibiting dogs from “running at large,” and
  • a person who kept a dog with the knowledge that the dog had a history of injuring people.

Dog bite statistics show that once a dog has bitten, the dog is more likely to bite again. Statistics on dog bites also show that 60% of all dog bite victims are children and that the dog bites they suffer usually occur close to home. While dog bite fatalities are rare, statistics show that 15 to 20 people are killed in vicious fatal dog attacks every year. The most dangerous dogs breeds include: Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Huskies, German Shepherds and Chows.
