Gilbert Municipal court is a court of lower jurisdiction in the East Valley of Maricopa County. They are authorized to hear misdemeanor criminal and civil matters arising from incidents that occur within the city limits. Gilbert officers are deputized to handle arrests throughout the State of Arizona, however.
Criminal cases that are heard in Gilbert Municipal court include assault, criminal damage, domestic violence, DUI, theft, disorderly conduct and trespassing offenses. Class 1 misdemeanors, the highest level of offense that is handled by this court, carry with them a maximum penalty of six months in jail.
If you have to go to Gilbert for any criminal offense, know that the policies and procedures of Gilbert City Court can be quite different than other jurisdictions. For example, the court may ask you many questions about your ability to pay fines and fees before authorizing a payment plan. Also know that the manner in which plea agreements are negotiated can be quite different in this court. The process to obtain a deviated plea may require that you submit a formal deviation request.
