DUI Attorney returns from the jungles of Nicaragua

DUI Attorney Nick Alcock has returned from his medical mission in Nicaragua. Over the course of a week, the team performed over 50 major surgeries. The team also helped another 20 patients with outpatient procedures. Many of the patients had a genetic disorder that causes cleft palates and lips. Without the surgical mission, there was little hope for these childer.

Says attorney Alcock, “It was a blessing to be able to get to know the good people of Nicaragua. I am very impressed with the friendliness of the people.”

One thing that didn’t happen was rest and relaxation. The attorney worked fourteen hour days, for six days straight. The surgical schedule was packed. Kids were lined up from 8 am to 9 or 10 at night. There was no rest for the weary.

The organizers of the medical mission helped line up the patients and make sure that they got to and from the hospital safely. Many of the kids had to travel 8 or 10 hours by bus. According to attorney Alcock, one child had to spend 8 hours on a small boat, and then four hours on the road to get to the clinic on time. Esperanca, the American charity, specializes in this type of coordination and logistical marathon. The local workers were tireless in their dedication to the children.

Attorney Alcock notes, “I’ve never seen people work harder for less. The typical nurse makes about $200 a month, doctors in Nicaragua make about $300. To earn that money, they sometimes have to work 48 hour shifts. It really is mind-boggling how these people survive. That being said, I was impressed by their spirit, attention to detail and level of patient care.

Now that the attorney is back from the jungle, his next step is to get the next projects moving in Nicaragua. While he was there, Alcock met with local officials and got the process started to build a school in a very impoverished shanty town. The building, partially constructed and previously abandoned, should be completed within a few months. Says Alcock, “Now that I have gotten to know the people of Nicaragua, I will make sure that I will do everything I can to help them. This school represents a great opportunity to make a difference.
