Tips on what to do if injured in an automobile accident

Injury Attorney Nick Alcock discusses how to handle an insurance claim.

If you’ve been involved in a car accident involving another automobile and sustained even minor injuries this blog is for you. There are a number of very important steps you will want to take. The first thing to do is to contact the police so that they can report to the scene. This first step is important to make sure there is an accurate exchange of information between the drivers involved. The police will then take statements from the drivers and any witnesses as well as personally view the scene of the accident in order to determine who was at fault in causing the accident. Any of the information contained within a police report can be very helpful later on if the other driver disputes your own personal account of the accident. Keep in mind that every case is different. Feel free to call our automobile accident attorneys if you have other questions.

The next thing we recommend you do is to find any eye-witnesses to the accident. This will be important later on in order to corroborate the validity of your claim if they are called upon to testify in court. Be sure to get as much of their contact information as possible such as their name, address and telephone number. Also, be certain that you get all of the relevant information from the other driver, such as his name, address, driver’s registration number, make, model and registration number of his vehicle and the name of the company providing insurance coverage on his vehicle.

If you suffered even the slightest of injuries as a result of the accident, seek medical assistance immediately! By quickly obtaining treatment, the more unlikely it is that the insurance company will be able to dispute the injuries in your claim. You don’t want to give the insurance company a chance to argue that your injuries were not the result of the accident but instead possibly from a pre-existing condition or from an entirely different incident.

Another critical component following an accident is to notify your automobile insurance company immediately. You will typically be asked questions such as where, when and how the accident occurred as well as who was at fault. They will also want to know if you were injured in the accident and the exact nature of your injuries.

If you are seeking financial compensation for the injuries you suffered as a result of the accident you will want to contact an attorney with specific knowledge and experience in handling personal injury cases. Be aware that it is not uncommon for insurance companies to employ tactics to ensure you receive as little compensation as possible. Having an attorney on your side to answer all of your questions and advise you on what to do and not to do is the best possible way to ensure you receive the compensation to which you are entitled.
