UNDERAGE DRINKER CHARGED WITH DUI WAS ILLEGAL, SAY CHANDLER POLICE

A 19-year-old man was found to be in the country illegally after Chandler police arrested him Friday on suspicion of underage drinking, officials said.

A Chandler police officer was patrolling an alley near Pecos Road and Arizona Avenue when he noticed a group drinking beer outside an apartment complex. According to police, Jose Velasco Moreno was among the group and identified himself as 19-years-old.

Officials said Moreno did not speak much English, and a translator was called to the scene. According to court documents, the suspect admitted to drinking two beers, and during a preliminary registered a blood alcohol content of .034 – less than half the threshold for a DUI offense.

Moreno was arrested and taken to a city jail. Officers found a pay stub in the suspect’s wallet listing a Social Security number on the top. According to police, the number was run through several databases and did not register to any individual.Moreno admitted purchasing the Social Security number a week earlier incident for $75.

It was not immediately clear if the suspect will face any additional charges.
