MESA MAN SENTENCED TO 24 YEARS FOR NEARLY BEATING HIS OWN DAUGHTER TO DEA

A Mesa man is headed to prison following a plea deal with prosecutors that resulted in a 24-year sentence and lifetime probation. 33-year-old George Kuykendall is the Mesa man who was arrested exactly two years ago for beating his young daughter with a folded power cord. Mesa police still refer to the crime as “the worst case of child abuse they’ve ever seen where the child survives.” Kuykendall pleaded guilty to two counts of child abuse on Wednesday.

The incident was reported in June 2010, when Kuykendall’s girlfriend went to the Mesa Police Station for help getting her 1-year-old son from another relationship out of Kuykendall’s apartment. She told police that they had been fighting, and when she left the apartment, Kuykendall refused to let his girlfriend take her own son with her. Police actually recognized the woman as the victim in a previous domestic-violence case involving Kuykendall, and knew there was a warrant for his arrest for skipping out on a court date. That created the opportunity to go arrest Kuykendall on the warrant and get his girlfriend’s son.

Police say Kuykendall beat his daughter with a power cord so severely that her kidneys shut down after the girl lost a large amount of blood. He deliberately folded the computer cord in half to beat his daughter, which left the girl covered in bruises, cuts, and welts, with injuries all the way down to her muscle tissue. The beating took place over a two day period. While his daughter was rushed to the hospital in obvious critical condition for her injuries, Kuykendall was arrested and booked into jail on three felony charges.

In addition to the twenty-four years in prison, Kuykendall’s guilty plea on two counts of child abuse also lands him on probation for the rest of his life.

Fortunately, the little girl is expected to recover physically.
